The new state mosque of Jordan, accommodating 5000 worshipers, was commissioned by King Abdallah II to commemorate the memory of his father the late King Hussein. This building represented the establishment of a new monarchy with a new identity whilst retaining the continuous link with its historical heritage. The building sits on top of a hill in central Amman overlooking the Hussein Gardens on one side and towards the holy city of Jerusalem on the other. The design of this building is quite a simple structure of a square plan with a minaret in each corner. Yet although the initial impression is that of a solid and robust structure; the design is quite open and layered in nature by integrating a series of arcades and courtyards as well as landscape areas which encourage the community to interact with the building as a living space and not just a place of worship only used during prayer times.
